Medieval music talk with Ashburton u3a

Ashburton u3a hosts a lecture-recital on medieval music with reconstructed instruments by The Greenwood Consort at Ashburton Town Hall on 27 January. Expect an engaging insight into how early music sounded, with non-members welcome and refreshments provided.

Curious about how music really sounded in the Middle Ages? Come and join Ashburton u3a for a friendly afternoon talk and live demonstration at Ashburton Town Hall. The Greenwood Consort’s Medieval Music – an archaeological journey explores what the evidence tells us (and what it doesn’t) about instruments, notation and performance before the age of recordings.

Presenters Ian Hiscock and Mark Bennett will bring reconstructed instruments, explain the scraps of guidance that survive from the period, and show how musicians today make informed choices to bring medieval music back to life. It’s a rare chance to see and hear these instruments up close, with explanations pitched for the interested listener rather than specialists.

Non-members are very welcome – it’s a relaxed session with proper tea, percolated coffee and biscuits beforehand. We’d love to see you there.
