Have your say on Buckfastleigh Library changes

Buckfastleigh Library sets out significant changes to local services, including reduced opening hours and children’s activities, with knock-on effects for learning, warmth and digital access. Please share your views via the questionnaire online or pick up a paper copy in the library.

Changes are being set out for the service at Buckfastleigh Library, and many residents are understandably worried about what this could mean for our town. Here’s a clear summary of the points being raised, and how you can add your voice.

What’s changing:

  • A 60% cut to opening hours, reduced to Thursday and Saturday morning (note: most other libraries are being cut by 30% or less).
  • No after-school access for schoolchildren, at a time of concern about a loss of literacy and excessive screen time.
  • Insufficient time for library staff to carry out essential work, including reservations, library tidiness, and liaising with other local organisations.
  • No time for children’s activities.
  • A loss of warm and social space for residents of all ages.
  • A loss of access to books and IT for people who are finding it difficult to make ends meet. Buckfastleigh is an area of high deprivation; regular access to a library is vital.

Why it matters: Libraries are more than books. They offer free access to reading, public computers and Wi‑Fi, friendly help from trained staff, and a safe, warm place to meet. In a small town like ours, having these within walking distance makes a real difference for families, older residents, and anyone on a tight budget.

Have your say: Please submit a questionnaire online, or collect a paper copy from Buckfastleigh Library. Your feedback helps show how much the service is needed locally.
