A new kind of creative play space has opened by the River Dart, at Riverview, Dart Mills Estate, TQ11 0NF just a few minutes’ walk from Buckfastleigh — and it’s already sparking messy, magical moments. The Yard is a welcoming, imaginative environment designed to help children and their grown-ups play, connect, and explore together. In a lovely spot alongside the river — which winds down from Dartmoor through Buckfastleigh — it offers time to slow down, have fun, and discover fresh ways to be together.
Founder Jules, a parent and play curator, explains the heart of the idea: “We wanted to create somewhere that feels relaxed and real. The Yard is about connection — a place where parents and carers can slow down, play, and really enjoy time with their little ones. It’s somewhere you can come as you are, relax, and share those small moments that matter.”
What you’ll find: thoughtful, sensory, and social play, with a programme that grows in collaboration with local families.
- Open-ended play sessions: relaxed, child-led time with imaginative prompts and space to explore.
- Weekend family activities: hands-on making and playful projects to enjoy together.
- Artist collaborations: visiting makers and facilitators bring fresh ideas and inspiration.
- Ever-evolving programme: shaped by what local children most want and need.
In just a few weeks, The Yard has become a buzzing little hub. Parents describe it as “a breath of fresh air” — a place that encourages creativity without the pressure of perfection. As one parent shared, “It’s so lovely to have somewhere nearby where we can just play and be together. It’s calm, friendly, and full of joy.”
Claire and Jules are passionate about collaborating with local people and businesses — from artists and makers to food pop-ups and community groups — to celebrate the spirit of this place by the river.
Looking ahead: plans in the pipeline include:
- “Big Talks” — evening events led by experts on understanding and supporting grown-ups living and working with neurodivergent children.
- Movement for wellbeing — gentle courses exploring how moving together can help us feel better.
- More creative workshops — playful, practical sessions for curious minds and busy hands.
- Family-friendly socials — welcoming gatherings to meet, chat, and make together.
Whether you’re popping in for a play session, joining a workshop, or just curious to see what’s happening, The Yard would love to welcome you. Come and be part of a growing, friendly collective by the river.
