River Exe talk and winter activities at Buckfastleigh WI

Buckfastleigh Women's Institute reflects on an inspiring River Exe talk and invites you to friendly gatherings, Christmas stalls and a New Year resolutions meeting. New faces are warmly welcomed, with a first visit free and chances to make new friends.

At our November get-together, Buckfastleigh Women’s Institute welcomed local photographer and speaker John Tucker for an absorbing “photographic journey along the west bank of the River Exe”. John took us from Exeter Quay down to Dawlish Warren, sharing facts and anecdotes along the way – from the medieval countess whose actions helped lead to the building of the Exeter Ship Canal (one of the oldest in the country) to the modern flood defences that protect our towns. It was a warm celebration of the River Exe and its estuary – a home to many and an internationally important haven for wildlife. Dawlish Warren, for example, is a National Nature Reserve and a key shelter for the Exe Estuary, which draws thousands of wintering waders and wildfowl each year. A thoroughly enjoyable evening.

John kindly stayed on to answer questions and to judge our competition, “Mindfulness – Colour a Mandala”. Congratulations to our winners: 1st Sarah Pan, 2nd Gill, and 3rd Elaine.
