Buckfastleigh nature group AGM and greater horseshoe bat talk

Come and join the Buckfastleigh Action for Nature Group for our AGM – a Greater Horseshoe Bat special. The café will be open for a cuppa and something to eat, so do come along and make an afternoon of it.

Event details:

  • Saturday 22 November 2025
  • 2–4pm
  • Moor Imagination Centre

We’re delighted to welcome Daniel Hargreaves, Bat Programme Manager with the Vincent Wildlife Trust (VWT), the charity dedicated to conserving our rarer mammals. Daniel will explore the ecology of greater horseshoe bats and the practical actions we can all take to help them, with a special focus on the Buckfastleigh roost – home to the largest maternity colony of these bats in Western Europe.

Greater horseshoe bats are among Britain’s rarest bats, now largely concentrated in the South West. They favour old buildings and caves for roosts and hibernation, and forage along hedgerows and pasture at dusk. Their distinctive horseshoe-shaped nose helps them echolocate as they hunt moths and beetles.

This talk will add extra meaning to the regular bat counts that our group and others have been carrying out in and around the town over the years. If you’re curious about getting involved, it’s a friendly way to learn how these surveys support local conservation.

AGM business: We’ll keep the formalities brief, then share updates from the year, including:

  • Devon Swifts Project
  • Open Wildlife Gardens
  • Pollinator Project
  • Verges and volunteer activities

Everyone is warmly welcome – members and non-members alike. It helps our planning if you can let us know you’re coming. We look forward to seeing you on the 22nd.
