Dying Conversations: advance decisions (living wills)

Heart and Soul Funerals hosts a Dying Conversations meeting at the MIC Centre, Buckfastleigh on Thursday 27 November, 6.30 to 8.30pm, exploring Advanced Decision (Living Will) choices. Come to talk, ask questions and start preparing your own document, with donations for refreshments.

Talking openly about death and dying can be a great relief. If you’ve been meaning to explore the subject in a gentle, welcoming space, the monthly Dying Conversations gathering at the MIC Centre is for you. Come along, ask the questions you’ve always had, or simply listen with a cuppa.

This month’s focus is on making an Advance Decision — sometimes called a “living will” and formally known as an Advance Decision to Refuse Treatment (ADRT) under the Mental Capacity Act 2005. It lets you set out the treatments you would refuse if, in the future, illness, injury or loss of mental capacity meant you couldn’t decide or communicate for yourself. Many people think about resuscitation, but an Advance Decision can also cover other life-sustaining treatments and specific circumstances. We’ll look at the topic in practical detail so you feel more confident about writing your own. There will be a follow‑up session on the same topic in January 2026 to help with drafting, if you’d like extra support.
