The Buckfastleigh Action for Nature Group has been buzzing with activity this year with two exciting projects that focus on supporting our local pollinator insects. These little creatures have seen a dramatic decline over the years, and we're keen to encourage the community to make their open spaces more inviting for them.
The Community Pollinator Project kicked off in February with a seed swap at the MIC. Since then, we've been encouraging both businesses and individuals in the town to sow and plant areas that are friendly to pollinators. Now, as we move into summer, our efforts are coming to fruition, with beautiful displays blossoming on the streets and in courtyards. Some residents, like John, have been contributing for years; he proudly showcases his trough of pollinator-friendly plants, giving a second life to plants that others have finished with for the season.
Take a stroll down Fore Street and you'll see several businesses proudly displaying their creations. And don't forget to look upwards as well as along the street!
Our local wildlife gardener, Charlie Scullion, has been instrumental in this effort. In addition to tending to various gardens around town and his own allotment, Charlie organised the Open Wildlife Gardens event this summer. Garden owners reported a noticeable increase in interest, particularly in topics like composting, chemical-free gardening, and how to develop wildlife-friendly spaces while maintaining attractive borders. It was a resounding success. Charlie also hosted a children's workshop at the library, where they created models and planted the trough outside the building.
In our next edition, we hope to share more photographs of these wonderful displays as we transition into autumn. Stay tuned for more inspiring images!
We're also thrilled to announce our support for the Devon Swift Project. On 16th July, Jerry Horn will give a talk about improving nesting habitats for swifts, with funding support from Riverford. Jerry is eager to find buildings suitable for installing swift boxes. If you're interested in participating, please reach out to us, and we’ll connect you with Jerry.
Lastly, mark your calendars for our upcoming Bat Count, hopefully happening at the end of July. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for more details as the date approaches.
