Buckfastleigh WI welcomes former Tower of London Beefeater

Buckfastleigh Women's Institute share highlights from a talk by retired Chief Yeoman Warder John Keohane on the Tower of London, plus news of a charity coffee morning and August outing. Next meeting is on 9 July in Buckfastleigh, with visitors welcome.

We had a fascinating evening in June as our members welcomed John Keohane, retired Chief Yeoman Warder of the Tower of London. He brought the role of the Yeoman Warders (better known as Beefeaters) vividly to life, explaining their duties as ceremonial guardians of the Tower and keepers of its traditions. John’s talk ranged from the building of the original White Tower by William the Conqueror to famous trials and executions, the ever-watchful Ravens, and the splendour of the Crown Jewels. His unique insights into more than 900 years of history had us all gripped, and he kindly stayed on to answer questions.

John also judged our light-hearted competition, “A piece of jewellery with a history.” Congratulations to our winners:

  • 1st: Elaine
  • 2nd: Anne G
  • 3rd: Sylvee

Looking ahead, we’re busy organising our annual August outing and a coffee morning in aid of Rowcroft Hospice. Rowcroft supports people with life-limiting illnesses across South Devon, so your cuppa really will help make a difference. We’re also keen to hear all about the Annual Meeting of the National Federation of Women’s Institutes, held earlier this month at the Royal Albert Hall and attended by Gill. It’s always inspiring to bring back ideas from the wider WI family.

Visitors are most welcome at our meetings – we simply ask non-members for a small contribution towards expenses. If you’ve been thinking of popping along, do come and say hello; we’d love to see you.

Next meeting:

  • Date and time: Tuesday 9 July 2024, 7pm
  • Venue: Buckfastleigh Rangers Football Club, Duckspond Road, Buckfastleigh
